There is no one quite like Alice Cooper. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has invented an entirely new genre of rock music, influenced generations of artists, and never once stopped putting on one of the most spectacular live shows in the history of popular music. He is the godfather of shock rock — and his legacy is as vital today as it has ever been.
At Wonderhaul, we carry officially licensed Alice Cooper merchandise for true fans. But first — the story of one of rock's most extraordinary figures.
Who Is Alice Cooper?
Alice Cooper is the stage name of Vincent Damon Furnier, born on 4 February 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. He adopted the Alice Cooper persona in the late 1960s as the frontman of the band of the same name, and has used it as a solo artist since 1975.
The name Alice Cooper was chosen for its contrast — an innocent, almost Victorian name attached to a performer whose stage show featured guillotines, electric chairs, fake blood, boa constrictors, and theatrical horror of every conceivable variety. The juxtaposition was the point.
Cooper has cited Screamin' Jay Hawkins, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones as early influences, but the Alice Cooper show was something genuinely new: rock music as Grand Guignol theatre, horror film as live performance, rebellion as spectacle.
The Alice Cooper Band: 1968–1975
The original Alice Cooper band — comprising Furnier, Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, and Neal Smith — relocated from Phoenix, Arizona to Los Angeles in 1968 and signed to Frank Zappa's Straight Records.
Their early albums, Pretties for You (1969) and Easy Action (1970), were experimental and uncommercial. The breakthrough came with their move to Warner Bros. and producer Bob Ezrin.
Love It to Death (1971) contained I'm Eighteen — the band's first US top 40 hit and an anthem of teenage alienation that still resonates. Killer (1971) followed immediately, consolidating their reputation as the most dangerous band in America.
School's Out (1972) was the commercial breakthrough — the title track became a global hit and one of the most recognisable songs in rock history. The album's themes of teenage rebellion and institutional frustration captured a cultural moment perfectly.
Billion Dollar Babies (1973) reached number one in both the UK and US and is widely considered the band's masterpiece. Featuring No More Mr. Nice Guy, Elected, and the title track, it is a record of extraordinary ambition and dark wit.
Welcome to My Nightmare (1975) marked Cooper's transition to a solo career and introduced the full theatrical horror show that would define his live performances for the next five decades. The accompanying TV special, directed by David Winters, was a landmark in rock television.
Solo Career: 1975–Present
Cooper's solo career has produced over 20 studio albums across five decades, ranging from the glam horror of Welcome to My Nightmare to the hard rock of Constrictor (1986), the pop-metal of Trash (1989, featuring Poison), and the more recent theatrical concept albums Welcome 2 My Nightmare (2011) and Detroit Stories (2021).
Key solo albums include:
- Welcome to My Nightmare (1975) — the definitive shock rock statement
- From the Inside (1978) — written during his stay at a psychiatric facility, darkly funny and surprisingly tender
- Trash (1989) — his biggest commercial success, featuring Poison
- The Last Temptation (1994) — a concept album and graphic novel collaboration
- Brutal Planet (2000) — a return to heavy rock
- Detroit Stories (2021) — a love letter to his hometown's rock heritage
Influence & Legacy
Alice Cooper's influence on rock and metal is incalculable. He essentially invented the template for theatrical rock performance that artists from Kiss to Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie to Slipknot have followed. His integration of horror film imagery, narrative storytelling, and spectacular staging into rock concerts changed what a live show could be.
He has been cited as a direct influence by:
- Marilyn Manson — who took the shock rock template and pushed it into new territory
- Rob Zombie — whose horror-themed shows owe an explicit debt to Cooper
- Kiss — who developed their own theatrical identity in parallel with Cooper's
- Ozzy Osbourne — whose solo career drew heavily on Cooper's shock tactics
- Nine Inch Nails — whose industrial theatricality has roots in Cooper's approach
Cooper was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. He continues to tour extensively, putting on shows that remain among the most spectacular in rock music.
