Black Sabbath — Official Merch, History, Albums & Legacy
Black Sabbath — The Godfathers of Heavy Metal
Black Sabbath are the most influential heavy metal band in history. Founded in Birmingham in 1968, the band invented a genre — their dark, heavy, riff-driven sound laying the foundation for heavy metal, doom metal, and countless subgenres that followed. This is your complete guide to the band — their history, albums, members, and legacy — plus our full range of official licensed Black Sabbath merchandise.
Band History
Black Sabbath formed in Aston, Birmingham in 1968, emerging from the working-class industrial landscape of the West Midlands. The original lineup — Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums) — began as a blues rock band before developing the heavier, darker sound that would define their legacy.
The band's name was inspired by a Boris Karloff horror film, and from the outset they embraced dark, occult-tinged imagery and lyrics that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their self-titled debut album, released in February 1970, is widely regarded as the birth of heavy metal — a record of extraordinary power and originality that arrived fully formed.
Between 1970 and 1978, the classic lineup recorded eight studio albums, including Paranoid, Master of Reality, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Heaven and Hell. Ozzy Osbourne departed in 1979 and was replaced by Ronnie James Dio, who brought a different but equally powerful vocal style to the band. The Dio-era albums — particularly Heaven and Hell (1980) and Mob Rules (1981) — are among the finest in the band's catalogue.
The band went through numerous lineup changes across the 1980s and 1990s before reuniting the classic Osbourne lineup for the The End farewell tour, which concluded in Birmingham in February 2017 — a fitting end for a band that had started in the same city nearly fifty years earlier.
Tony Iommi — The Architect of Heavy Metal
Tony Iommi is the creative heart of Black Sabbath and one of the most important guitarists in rock history. His down-tuned, riff-based playing style — developed in part to compensate for the loss of the tips of two fingers on his right hand in a factory accident at age 17 — created the sonic template for heavy metal.
Iommi's riffs are among the most recognisable in rock: the opening of Black Sabbath, the thunderous groove of Iron Man, the relentless drive of Paranoid. His influence on rock and metal guitar is immeasurable — virtually every heavy metal guitarist who followed owes a debt to his innovations.
Ozzy Osbourne — The Prince of Darkness
Ozzy Osbourne's voice is one of the most distinctive in rock history. His melodic, slightly haunted vocal style was the perfect complement to Iommi's crushing riffs, and together they created some of the most iconic songs in heavy metal. After leaving Black Sabbath in 1979, Osbourne went on to a hugely successful solo career, with albums like Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981) cementing his status as a rock legend in his own right.

Legacy & Influence
Black Sabbath's influence on rock and metal is without parallel. Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Soundgarden, and countless others have cited them as a primary influence. Their dark, heavy sound created the template for an entire genre — and their best work remains as powerful today as it was when it was recorded.
The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019. Tony Iommi was awarded a CBE in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours for services to music.
