Between 2015 and 2018, Muse released two of their most ambitious and politically charged records: Drones (2015) and Simulation Theory (2018). Rooted in the imagery of The Wow Signal — a mysterious 1977 radio transmission that may or may not have been of extraterrestrial origin — this era saw the band push their sci-fi aesthetic to its furthest extreme, while delivering some of their most powerful music.
At Wonderhaul, we carry officially licensed Muse merchandise from this era and beyond. But first — let's explore what made this period so remarkable.
The Wow Signal: A Brief History
On 15 August 1977, astronomer Jerry R. Ehman, working on a SETI project at the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio, detected an anomalous radio signal from deep space. He circled it on the printout and wrote "Wow!" in the margin. The signal — now known as the Wow! Signal — has never been explained or detected again.
For Muse, it became a potent symbol: a moment of contact with the unknown, a reminder of humanity's smallness in the cosmos, and a metaphor for the kind of truth that power structures would rather suppress. It fed directly into the imagery and themes of their mid-2010s work.
Drones (2015): A Concept Album About Control
Drones is Muse's seventh studio album, released on 8 June 2015. It is a full concept album — the story of a soldier who is dehumanised, turned into a drone (both literal and metaphorical), and ultimately reclaims his humanity.
Produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange — the legendary producer behind albums by AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain — Drones is the band's most deliberately "classic rock" record, stripping back the electronic elements of The 2nd Law in favour of raw guitar power and vocal harmonies.
Key Tracks
Dead Inside opens the album with a cold, electronic pulse before exploding into one of Bellamy's most controlled vocal performances. It sets the album's themes of emotional suppression and manipulation perfectly.
Psycho is the album's most visceral moment — a drill sergeant's bark over a crushing riff, with Bellamy channelling the dehumanising language of military conditioning. It became one of their biggest live moments.
Mercy is the album's emotional centrepiece: a soaring, anthemic plea for compassion that showcases Bellamy's voice at its most powerful.
The Handler is a seven-minute prog-rock epic about psychological manipulation — one of the album's most complex and rewarding tracks.
Revolt is the moment of resistance: a euphoric, fist-pumping anthem that provides the album's emotional release after the darkness that precedes it.
The Globalist is the album's centrepiece — a ten-minute suite that moves through acoustic balladry, spaghetti western, and full orchestral rock. It is one of Muse's most ambitious compositions.
Drones closes the album with an a cappella choral piece — stark, beautiful, and deeply unsettling. It is unlike anything else in their catalogue.
Legacy
Drones debuted at number one in 21 countries, including the UK and US. It won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2016 — Muse's first Grammy win. The accompanying tour was one of the most spectacular in rock history, featuring actual drones flying over the audience.
