Slipknot is one of the most ferocious debut albums ever committed to tape. Released on 29 June 1999 via Roadrunner Records, it introduced the world to nine masked men from Des Moines, Iowa, and a sound so aggressive, so chaotic, and so viscerally intense that it felt like nothing that had come before. It debuted at number 51 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell over three million copies in the US alone.
Background & Recording
Slipknot had been building their reputation on the Des Moines underground scene for years before their major label debut, self-releasing a demo album in 1996. By the time they entered Indigo Ranch Studios with producer Ross Robinson — the same producer behind Korn's debut — they were a tightly drilled, ferociously committed unit with a clear vision.
Robinson's raw, live-in-the-room approach suited Slipknot perfectly. The album was recorded with minimal overdubs and maximum intensity, capturing the band at their most unhinged. The result was a record that sounded like it had been dragged from somewhere very dark indeed.

Key Tracks
Wait and Bleed was the breakthrough single — a rare moment of melodic accessibility on an otherwise relentless record, and the song that introduced Slipknot to mainstream rock radio. (sic) opens the album with one of the most aggressive statements of intent in metal history. Spit It Out became a live favourite for its call-and-response breakdown, a moment of crowd participation that has become one of the great rituals of Slipknot's live show. Tattered & Torn remains a fan favourite for its raw, unsettling atmosphere.
Legacy
Slipknot's debut didn't just launch a band — it launched a movement. The nine-piece lineup, the matching boilersuits, the numbered masks, the percussive chaos of two drummers and a custom percussion rig: everything that makes Slipknot unique was present from day one. The album's 20th anniversary edition, released in 2019, introduced it to a new generation and confirmed its status as a landmark of heavy music.
