On 14 November 1991, an estimated 500 million people in 27 countries tuned in simultaneously to watch the world premiere of Michael Jackson's Black or White music video. It was the largest audience ever assembled for a music video at that point.

The Song: A Rock-Pop Anthem Against Prejudice
Black or White was the lead single from the Dangerous album and MJ's most direct statement on racial prejudice. Opening with a Slash guitar riff, the track was a deliberate genre collision - rock, pop, and rap fused into a radio-ready anthem. It debuted at number one in the US and topped the charts in 11 countries, spending seven weeks at number one in the UK.
The Video: John Landis Returns
Director John Landis - who helmed the Thriller short film - returned for Black or White. The video opened with Macaulay Culkin before cutting to MJ dancing across global locations: Africa, Russia, India, Thailand, and Native American landscapes. The centrepiece was a groundbreaking morphing sequence - one of the first uses of digital morphing technology in a music video - in which faces of different ethnicities seamlessly transformed into one another.
The Panther Dance: The Controversial Finale
The video's final four minutes - the panther sequence - were the most controversial. MJ transformed into a black panther and back, performing an extended solo dance sequence that drew immediate complaints from US broadcasters. The original panther dance remains one of the most electrifying pieces of solo performance ever captured on film - and it's the image immortalised on our Black or White Panther Dance T-Shirt.
