Definitely Maybe: How Oasis Made the Fastest-Selling Debut in UK History

Definitely Maybe: The Album That Made Oasis, and the Record That Changed British Music Forever

In the mid-1990s, British music needed a shot of something. Grunge had arrived from America and briefly dominated the conversation. The charts were full of dance music and polished pop. And then, in August 1994, five lads from Manchester released a debut album that sold 100,000 copies in its first week and became the fastest-selling debut in UK chart history.

Definitely Maybe didn't just launch Oasis — it announced a new era. Brash, melodic, swaggering, and shot through with an almost absurd self-belief, it was the sound of a band who knew exactly what they were and didn't care who disagreed. Thirty-plus years on, it remains one of the greatest debut albums ever made.

The Making of Definitely Maybe

Oasis had been building a following on the Manchester circuit since 1991, with Liam Gallagher's extraordinary voice and Noel Gallagher's songwriting instinct forming the core of something that felt genuinely special. Their early demos circulated widely, and by the time they signed to Creation Records in 1993, the anticipation was already significant.

The album was recorded across two sessions — the first at Monnow Valley Studio in Wales, which was scrapped, and the second at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall, which produced the record we know. Producer Owen Morris mixed it with a compression and volume that was unlike anything else on the radio at the time — loud, immediate, and impossible to ignore.

The result was ten tracks of near-perfect Britpop: Rock 'n' Roll Star, Shakermaker, Live Forever, Up in the Sky, Columbia, Supersonic, Bring It On Down, Cigarettes & Alcohol, Digsy's Dinner, She's Electric — and the closing one-two of Married with Children and Slide Away, which showed a more tender, expansive side to Noel's writing that would define their later work.

The Fastest-Selling Debut in UK History

Released on 29 August 1994, Definitely Maybe entered the UK Albums Chart at number one and sold over 100,000 copies in its first week — a record for a debut album at the time. The speed of its success was staggering, driven by word of mouth, relentless touring, and the sheer force of the music itself.

By mid-May 1995, as the chart reporting cycles caught up with the sustained sales momentum, Definitely Maybe had firmly established itself as a cultural phenomenon. It wasn't just selling — it was everywhere. On every student union jukebox, blasting from every car window, the soundtrack to a generation finding its feet.

The album has since been certified seven times platinum in the UK and has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. In 2006, it was voted the greatest British album of all time by readers of Q magazine. In 2020, it was ranked 71st on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums ever made.

Why Definitely Maybe Still Sounds Incredible

There's a reason Definitely Maybe endures when so much of its era hasn't. The songs are simply brilliant — Noel Gallagher's melodic instinct is on full display from the opening seconds of Rock 'n' Roll Star, and it never lets up. But it's also the attitude. The album sounds like it was made by people who had absolutely nothing to lose and everything to prove, and that energy is completely infectious.

Liam Gallagher's vocal performance is extraordinary throughout — sneering and tender in equal measure, with a tone that is entirely his own. There is no one who sounds like Liam Gallagher. There never has been. And on Definitely Maybe, he sounds like the most confident 21-year-old on the planet.

And what drove that ambition? Noel Gallagher has spoken openly about the artists who shaped his philosophy — none more so than David Bowie. Read our full piece on what Bowie taught Oasis about being untouchable.

The Reunion — Oasis Live '25

After 16 years apart — following the infamous backstage bust-up at Rock en Seine in 2009 — Oasis announced their reunion in August 2024. The news broke the internet. Ticket demand for the Oasis Live '25 tour was unlike anything seen in British music for years, with millions of fans attempting to secure tickets simultaneously and causing widespread queuing system chaos.

The tour — spanning stadiums across the UK, Ireland, Europe, North America, and Australia — is one of the most anticipated live events in recent memory. For a generation who were too young to see them first time around, and for those who were there and never thought they'd see it again, Oasis Live '25 is the moment.
