Slipknot – Iowa (2001): The Darkest Place

Iowa is Slipknot at their most extreme. Released on 28 August 2001 via Roadrunner Records, their second album is heavier, darker, and more unrelenting than anything they had done before — a record that pushed the boundaries of what heavy music could be and remains one of the most intense albums ever made. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and went platinum in the US.

Background & Recording

The sessions for Iowa were notoriously difficult. The band were under enormous pressure following the success of their debut, and internal tensions were running high. Several members have spoken about the recording as one of the darkest periods of their lives, and that darkness permeates every track.

Produced by Ross Robinson once again, Iowa was recorded with the same raw, live intensity as the debut — but pushed further into extremity. The album is longer, louder, and more abrasive, with moments of genuine sonic violence that still shock on first listen. The title track, a 15-minute closer, is one of the most harrowing pieces of music in the metal canon.

Key Tracks

Left Behind was the lead single and the album's most accessible track — a melodic, hook-driven song that provided a counterpoint to the surrounding brutality. Disasterpiece is the album's most ferocious moment, a relentless assault that became a live staple and a fan favourite. The Heretic Anthem features one of Corey Taylor's most iconic vocal performances. The closing title track Iowa is a 15-minute descent into pure darkness — harrowing, hypnotic, and unlike anything else in the band's catalogue.

Legacy

Iowa is the album that proved Slipknot were not a novelty. Where the debut had introduced the world to their sound, Iowa demonstrated that they were capable of genuine artistic ambition — willing to make a record that was commercially risky, emotionally brutal, and utterly uncompromising. It remains a benchmark of extreme heavy music and a record that has influenced countless bands in the decades since.
