This Day in Rock History: January 18th
From The Beatles' US breakthrough to Rock in Rio and Van Halen's 1984 Tour January 18th stands out as one of the most important dates in rock history.
From The Beatles' first appearance on the American charts to the formation of a legendary supergroup and some of the biggest live performances ever staged, this date helped shape the sound and culture of rock music.
Here's a look at the biggest rock moments that happened on January 18th.
The Beatles Break America (1964)
On January 18th, 1964, The Beatles entered the US charts for the very first time when I Want To Hold Your Hand debuted at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Just two weeks later, the single hit No. 1, igniting full-scale Beatlemania across America. That breakthrough marked the start of an astonishing run — seven US No.1 singles in a single year — and permanently changed popular music on both sides of the Atlantic.
Few moments in rock history are as significant as this one.
Bad Company Is Born (1974)
January 18th also marks the formation of Bad Company, one of rock's most successful supergroups.
In 1974,
Paul Rodgers (vocals) and Simon Kirke (drums) from Free
Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople
Boz Burrell from King Crimson
came together to form a new band that blended blues, hard rock and arena-filling hooks.
Bad Company went on to sell over 40 million records worldwide and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame decades later, cementing their legacy as one of rock's definitive bands.
Stevie Wonder Makes History (1989)
On January 18th, 1989, Stevie Wonder became the youngest living artist ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
He was inducted by Paul Simon, and the same Hall of Fame class included iconic names such as The Rolling Stones and The Temptations — making it one of the most celebrated inductions in rock history.
The Loss of Glenn Frey (2016)
January 18th is also a day of remembrance. In 2016, Glenn Frey, founding member and co-lead singer of Eagles, passed away at the age of 67 due to multiple health complications.
Alongside Don Henley, Frey co-wrote many of the band's greatest songs, including Take It Easy and New Kid in Town. His songwriting and musicianship helped define the sound of 1970s American rock.
Van Halen Launch the Iconic 1984 Tour (1984)
On January 18th, 1984, Van Halen kicked off their massive "1984 Tour" with a show at the Jacksonville Coliseum in Florida.
The tour ran for 101 shows across two legs and became one of the most famous arena tours of the decade, coinciding with the release of 1984 — one of the band's biggest and most influential albums.
Rock in Rio II Takes Over the World (1991)
In 1991, the second edition of Rock in Rio began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the legendary Maracanã Stadium.
Over nine days, the festival featured an extraordinary lineup including:
Guns N' Roses
Prince
INXS
George Michael
Metallica
Megadeth
Judas Priest
Billy Idol
Faith No More
The event was broadcast live to 55 countries and watched by over half a billion people, making it one of the most widely viewed music events in history.
