Johnny Marr and Manchester: The Guitar That Built a City
Johnny Marr was born in Ardwick, Manchester in 1963. He grew up in Wythenshawe, and it was in the bedrooms and rehearsal rooms of this city that he developed the guitar style that would go on to define an era.
In 1982, he knocked on the door of Steven Patrick Morrissey and handed him a cassette. Within months, The Smiths were formed — and within a few years, they had become one of the most important bands Britain had ever produced. The Queen Is Dead, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now? — the guitar work on those records is still studied, still imitated, and still impossible to replicate.
After The Smiths dissolved in 1987, Marr went on to collaborate with an extraordinary range of artists — The The, Electronic, Modest Mouse, The Cribs, and Hans Zimmer among them — before launching a critically acclaimed solo career with The Messenger in 2013.
Tonight, he brings all of that history back to the city that made him.
Why Johnny Marr Is One of the Greatest Guitarists of His Generation
Ask any serious guitarist to name their influences and Johnny Marr's name will come up. His playing is melodic, rhythmically complex, and instantly recognisable — built on a foundation of soul, funk, and classic rock filtered through a uniquely Mancunian sensibility.
His solo work has shown a different side: electronic-influenced, propulsive, and forward-looking. Albums like Playland, Call the Comet and Fever Dreams Pts 1–4 have cemented his reputation as an artist who refuses to coast on legacy.
Tonight at Castlefield Bowl, expect both — the songs that defined a generation, and the artist he's become.
