Motörhead — Official Merch, History, Albums & Legacy

Motörhead — The Loudest Band in the World

Motörhead were one of the most influential rock and heavy metal bands of all time. Founded in London in 1975 by the legendary Lemmy Kilmister, the band became synonymous with raw power, blistering speed, and an uncompromising attitude that defined generations of rock and metal music. This is your complete guide to the band — their history, albums, members, and legacy — plus our full range of official licensed Motörhead merchandise.

Band History

Motörhead was formed by Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister after his departure from space rock pioneers Hawkwind in 1975. Taking their name from a slang term for a speed user, the band quickly established a ferocious live reputation and a sound that blended punk aggression with heavy metal power — before either genre had fully defined itself.

The classic lineup that most fans know — Lemmy, guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke, and drummer Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor — recorded some of the band's most iconic material between 1978 and 1982, including the landmark albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and the live masterpiece No Sleep 'til Hammersmith.

In 1984, Welsh guitarist Phil Campbell joined the band, beginning a tenure that would last over three decades. Alongside drummer Mikkey Dee (who joined in 1992), this lineup produced some of Motörhead's most celebrated later work, including the Grammy-winning Inferno (2004) and the final studio album Bad Magic (2015).

Lemmy Kilmister — The Icon

Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister was Motörhead. His thunderous bass playing, gravelly vocals, and larger-than-life personality made him one of rock's most beloved and recognisable figures. Born on 24 December 1945 in Staffordshire, England, Lemmy spent decades on the road, rarely taking breaks and famously living by his own rules.

Lemmy passed away on 28 December 2015, just four days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. He was 70 years old. The outpouring of grief from the global rock community was immediate and overwhelming — a testament to the profound impact he had on music and on the lives of millions of fans worldwide. Within days, the remaining members announced that Motörhead would not continue without him.

Phil Campbell — Guitarist & Legend

Phil Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984 and became one of the band's most enduring members, contributing to over a dozen studio albums across more than three decades. Born on 7 May 1961 in Pontypridd, Wales, Campbell was known for his melodic, powerful guitar style and his deep loyalty to the band and its fans.

After Motörhead disbanded following Lemmy's death, Campbell formed Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons with his three sons, continuing to fly the flag for hard rock. Sadly, Phil Campbell passed away on 13 March 2026, at the age of 64, following complications after a major operation. Read our full Phil Campbell tribute.

Legacy & Influence

Motörhead's influence on rock and metal is immeasurable. Bands from Metallica to Foo Fighters have cited them as a primary influence. Their music — fast, loud, and utterly uncompromising — helped define thrash metal, speed metal, and punk-metal crossover genres. The Warpig, Snaggletooth, and the Ace of Spades remain among the most recognisable symbols in rock culture.
