Diamond Eyes is one of rock music's great comeback stories. Released on 4 May 2010 via Reprise Records, Deftones' sixth album was written and recorded in the shadow of tragedy — and emerged as one of the most vital, energised records of their career. It debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and was met with widespread critical acclaim.
Background & Recording
The circumstances surrounding Diamond Eyes are inseparable from its power. In November 2008, bassist Chi Cheng was involved in a serious car accident that left him in a semi-comatose state. The band had been working on an album called Eros at the time, but shelved it out of respect for Chi and began writing new material.
What emerged was Diamond Eyes — a record that channelled grief, uncertainty, and determination into some of the most focused and melodically rich music Deftones had ever made. Sergio Vega stepped in on bass, and the band recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who helped them achieve a sound that was simultaneously heavy and luminous.
Chi Cheng passed away in April 2013, never having recovered. Diamond Eyes stands as a tribute to his spirit and the band's refusal to be broken by loss.

Key Tracks
Diamond Eyes opens the album with one of the band's most immediately arresting riffs — a statement of intent that announces the record's energy from the first second. Rocket Skates is the album's heaviest moment, a relentless, riff-driven track that became a live staple. Sextape is its perfect counterpoint — a shimmering, dream-pop ballad that showcases Moreno's melodic range and remains one of Deftones' most beautiful songs. You've Seen the Butcher became a fan favourite for its groove and atmosphere.
Legacy
Diamond Eyes proved that Deftones were not just survivors but artists capable of turning adversity into art. It introduced a new generation of fans to the band and is now widely regarded as one of their finest records — a worthy companion to White Pony and a testament to what music can achieve in the darkest of circumstances.
