In March 1972, Deep Purple released an album that would change rock music forever. Recorded in a Montreux casino corridor after a fire broke out during a Frank Zappa concert — the very fire that inspired Smoke on the Water — Machine Head was born out of chaos, improvisation, and sheer creative force. It remains one of the most important hard rock albums ever made.

2026 update: Deep Purple are back with a new album — Splat!, produced by Bob Ezrin, described as one of their heaviest records since the classic era. The spirit of Machine Head lives on.
The Making of Machine Head
Deep Purple arrived in Montreux in December 1971 to record using the Rolling Stones' mobile unit. On the first night, a fire burned the Casino to the ground. The band watched the smoke drift across Lake Geneva and Roger Glover scribbled "smoke on the water" in his notebook. Undeterred, they relocated to the Grand Hotel and recorded the entire album in a corridor.
Track by Track
Highway Star
The album opens at full throttle — a masterclass in hard rock. Wear it with the Highway Star T-Shirt.
Smoke on the Water
The most recognisable guitar riff in history. Celebrate it with the Smoke Circle T-Shirt.
Lazy
A slow-burning blues workout that lets Jon Lord's Hammond organ take centre stage. Over seven minutes of pure indulgence.
Space Truckin'
The album closes with a hard-driving rocker that became a live favourite. Honour it with the Space Truckin' Textile Poster.
The Legacy
Machine Head spent 20 weeks in the UK Albums Chart and reached number one. Without it, there is no KISS, no Judas Priest, no Metallica as we know them. Its DNA runs through five decades of hard rock and heavy metal.
How to Celebrate Machine Head
The best way to honour this landmark album is to wear it. Our Machine Head Album Cover T-Shirt and Machine Head Grey T-Shirt are the definitive fan tributes.
