Deep Purple Albums Ranked: From Shades of Deep Purple to Now What?!

Deep Purple have released over 20 studio albums across six decades. We've ranked the essential ones, and linked you to the merch that celebrates the best of them. Visit our Deep Purple hub or shop the full collection.

Latest news: Deep Purple have just announced their 24th studio album Splat! (July 2026) and a massive world tour — produced by Bob Ezrin and described as one of their heaviest records in years.

1. Machine Head (1972)

The undisputed peak. Smoke on the Water, Highway Star, Space Truckin', Lazy — one of the greatest hard rock albums ever made. Celebrate it with the Machine Head Album Cover T-Shirt or the Machine Head Grey T-Shirt.

2. In Rock (1970)

The album that made Deep Purple a genuine heavy metal pioneer. Shop the In Rock T-Shirt, In Rock Back Patch, In Rock Woven Patch, In Rock Pin Badge, In Rock Textile Poster, or the In Rock Daypack.

3. Fireball (1971)

Often overshadowed by Machine Head, Fireball is ferocious and experimental. The title track is one of their heaviest moments.

4. Burn (1974)

The first album with David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes — a bold reinvention. The title track is a hard rock masterpiece.

5. Perfect Strangers (1984)

The Mark II reunion album nobody expected to be this good. Perfect Strangers and Knocking at Your Back Door proved the classic lineup still had plenty left to say.

6–10. The Rest of the Catalogue

Stormbringer (1974), Come Taste the Band (1975), Now What?! (2013), The Book of Taliesyn (1968), and Shades of Deep Purple (1968) — the debut featuring Hush — all have their champions.
