About the Ramones
The Ramones were formed in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, in 1974. The original lineup — Joey Ramone (vocals), Johnny Ramone (guitar), Dee Dee Ramone (bass), and Tommy Ramone (drums) — adopted the same surname as a band concept, presenting themselves as a dysfunctional family united by a love of fast, loud, stripped-back rock and roll.
The Ramones' music was a direct reaction against the bloated excess of 1970s rock. Their songs were short, fast, and ferociously energetic — rarely exceeding two minutes, built on buzzsaw guitar riffs, pounding drums, and Joey's distinctive nasal vocals. Their 1976 self-titled debut album is widely regarded as one of the most important records in rock history.
The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and their influence can be heard in virtually every punk, alternative, and indie band that followed them.
