What Is Nu Metal?
Nu metal emerged in the mid-1990s as a fusion of heavy metal with hip-hop, funk, industrial, and alternative rock. Korn
The originators. Formed in Bakersfield, California in 1993, Korn's self-titled 1994 debut is widely recognised as one of the first nu metal albums. Their 1998 record Follow The Leader made them global superstars, and they remain the genre's most enduring act. In 2026, they returned with new single Reward The Scars, their first music in over three years.

Deftones
The genre's most critically acclaimed act. Deftones have always operated at the intersection of nu metal, shoegaze, and alternative rock, producing a body of work that has only grown in stature over time. White Pony (2000) is regularly cited as one of the greatest rock albums ever made.
Slipknot
Nine members. Matching boilersuits. Masks. Slipknot took nu metal's aggression and theatricality to its logical extreme, becoming one of the most visually and sonically intense live acts in rock history. Their self-titled 1999 debut and Iowa (2001) remain genre benchmarks.
The Nu Metal Revival
Nu metal never really went away — it just went underground. The early 2020s saw a wave of renewed interest driven by TikTok, where tracks like Freak on a Leash and Chop Suey racked up millions of views from listeners who weren't even born when they were released. Bands like Spiritbox, Wargasm, and Loathe have carried the torch into a new era, while the originals — Korn, Deftones, Slipknot — continue to headline arenas worldwide.
